The largest exhibition of Vassili Nesterenko
From 9 February to 3 March 2017 in the State Exhibition Hall “Manezh”, the retrospective anniversary exhibition of the National artist of Russia, member of the Russian Academy of arts Vassili Nesterenko. The exhibition is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the artist and the 35th anniversary of his artistic activity. The exhibition is organised with the support of Department of culture of Moscow, Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Academy of arts.
Vassili Nesterenko is a leader of contemporary Russian art. Widespread fame brought him historical paintings and temple murals. Received full academic education, they are masters of all means of artistic skills. His works are in Russian and foreign Museum collections, he is the author of personal exhibitions in almost all major cities of Russia, CIS and other countries. For example, recently had a big success of the exhibition of Vassili Nesterenko at the State art Museum of China in Beijing and the Vatican Museums.
In the entire history of the Manezh exhibition hall, few artists could decide to organize an exhibition on its premises. For Vassili Nesterenko, this is the third personal exhibition in the Manezh, the largest exhibition hall in the country. On two floors will be presented hundreds of paintings and graphic works by the master. The exhibition is called “Our glory – Russian Empire!” most fully reflects the creative path of the artist, his goals and objectives, the artistic and emotional focus of his works. Russia – is the main theme of the exhibition and of the entire work of Vassily Nesterenko. This is our glorious past, and a reflection of the historical and spiritual traditions in today’s world, and the diversity of nature, and images of his contemporaries
The exhibition will present historical works focus on key moments in Russian history. “Getting rid of Confusion”, “Fall invasion”, “Moscow greets the heroes of Poltava”, “Defend Sevastopol!”, “Triumph of the Russian fleet”, “We are Russians, God is with us!” ‒ the names of his monumental historical paintings.
For Vassily Nesterenko, a reference to the past is primarily the ability to speak in the language of the history about the problems of modernity. For example, the picture “Defend of Sevastopol!” dedicated to the Crimean war of the mid-nineteenth century, but it is obvious to everyone that this call to his contemporaries. The painting became a symbol of heroism of the Russian people, anticipating the return of the Crimea to Russia.

The theme of the story in the artist’s work is closely connected with spiritual paintings. Vassily has reconstituted huge mural of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. He participated in painting of many churches in Russia and abroad. By the celebration of 1000 years of Russian monasticism on Athos Vassily Nesterenko has painted church of St Panteleimon on the Athos mount. Numerous sketches and cardboard paintings, a series of works on spiritual subjects will be presented at the exhibition.
Landscape painting of Vassily Nesterenko is an attempt to convey not art feelings by means of art: the sound of the surf in Kamchatka and the smell of the waves of the Black sea, the transparency of the lake Baikal, and the cold of the lake, the heaviness of wet snow on the branches and the noise of falling leaves in autumn forest. Works devoted to the nature of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. The works are united in series called “Borders.” The series “Oh, Russian land!” is the anthem of Central Russia, with its poetic nature, temples and monasteries.
Among the heroes of portraits created by Vasily Nesterenko,characters of the past and the heroes of our time. Historical portraits of Prince Pozharsky, Ivan Susanin, Peter the Great, the associates of Catherine The Great, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and of Patriarch Tikhon are juxtaposed with images of our contemporaries. This renowned figures of Russian culture and science, clergy, women and children.
Still life paintings created by Vassily Nesterenko are very interesting. He invented his own form of historical still-life. In addition to subject plan often includes elements of landscape, interior, and often half-figures of people.
Thus, the exhibition will be presented works of the artist made over the last few decades in all genres of painting. A large number of works will first be exhibited to a wide audience.
